About Me
About Benny Pope
Benny Pope is a multifaceted performer—an actor, comedian, voice-over artist, and playwright whose work blends sharp wit, heartfelt storytelling, and dynamic stage presence. He is a proud member of the Black Classical Acting Ensemble with the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company in Baltimore, Maryland, where he also serves as a company member.
Roots & Inspiration
Benny was born in rural South Carolina, the seventh of eight sons in a lively, adventurous household. Growing up in the country gave him a deep well of experiences, personalities, and humor to draw from—fueling his natural gift for writing and comedy. His upbringing remains one of the strongest influences on his creative work today.
On Stage
Over the years, Benny has performed in a wide spectrum of productions, from the works of James Weldon Johnson to the timeless plays of William Shakespeare. His versatility and comedic timing allow him to bring both classical and contemporary characters to life with equal power.
In 2009, Benny introduced audiences to Sal—a 74-year-old, tell-it-like-it-is firecracker inspired by the men in his family. Sal quickly became a fan favorite and the heart of two successful one-man shows written and produced by Benny: Who Is You Hollerin’ At? and Who Got the Body? These productions showcase Benny’s strength as both a performer and storyteller, blending humor, truth, and tradition in unforgettable ways.
Off Stage
When he’s not creating or performing, Benny enjoys staying active and seeing the world. He loves playing tennis and traveling—especially to two of his favorite destinations, Hawaii and Aruba.
